Step Forward for Kids College Scholarship Competition. One $1000 scholarship and one $500 scholarship will be awarded to students graduating from a Wisconsin high school in the spring of 2013 who plan to enroll in a two- or four-year college in the fall of 2013. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the student’s record of commitment to improving conditions for fellow youth in their school and/or community, who have spoken out on behalf of children or youth to bring about positive change.

6/15/12  - Listening Session - to hear: your ideas for the future of disability advocacy and the issues that need to be addressed in the areas of special education, developmental disability, mental health and physical disability services and disability rights.

The Board of Directors of Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW) will be
conducting a Listening Session on Friday, June 15, 2012 in Green Bay.

DRW is the designated protection and advocacy agency for people with developmental, physical, or sensory disabilities and people with mental illness in Wisconsin. DRW engages in a variety of advocacy strategies, including one-on-one advocacy for individuals and their families; systems advocacy (influencing state and county policy, legislative advocacy and coalition building); class action and impact litigation; and providing training to people with disabilities, their family members, human service professionals, attorneys and others on a variety of disability related topics. 

The DRW Board wants to hear from people with disabilities, their families, friends, disability activists, service providers and other concerned individuals about your ideas for the future of disability advocacy and the issues that need to be addressed in the areas of special education, developmental disability, mental health and physical disability services and disability rights.

Free Wisconsin Youth Leadership Forum (WI YLF): a week-long leadership training and career awareness program for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with disabilities.

It provides training in leadership, self-advocacy skills, and career awareness to approximately 25 students with disabilities from throughout the state of Wisconsin held at Edgewood College, Madison, WI.

(2 different sessions): Howe Elementary School  Wisconsin Rapids ~

Safety City is a child-sized city that teaches your child about various safety points in a positive, fun learning environment. Topics covered include seat belt, fire, poison, personal and water safety; with a daily emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle safety. This week-long course is only open to children ages 4-6 who would be entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2012. Most but not all activities will be done indoors. Children should dress comfortably and wear closed toe shoes.

Registration  Wisconsin Rapids Park and Recreation Department. opens May 17th. 1:00pm-5:00pm in the City Hall lobby. Classes are limited to 18 children per session.

Camp Quest is a summer camp for teens and young adults with disabilities.  This event is open to young adults with disabilities, ages 14-21, from the counties of Dunn, Eau Claire, Chippewa, Barron, Clark, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk and St. Croix.  

THIS is an overnight event so bring your sleeping bag and pillow.
